Hour 1: Jesus & Israel's Hopes
This week, we will begin with your debate on the resolution, "Jesus was a disappointment to Israel's messianic hopes." Is that true of false? That is the question we'll take up in the first hour or so of class.
Hour 2: The Synoptic Problem and Biblical Interpretation Methods
From there, I have a lecture on the synoptic problem, and how it is that we have these three gospels that are so much alike, yet have different perspectives.
Hour 3: Paper #1 for Group Work
In the time that's left, we'll talk about sample Paper #1 (available as a Week 3 Handout in Resources) and the skills you'll need to produce one of those on your focal text.
Prepare for class like this:
- Be ready for the debate.
- Read Taylor reserve.
- Read Burridge, chapter 1.
- Read Carvalho, part 1.
- Take quiz before class.
- Read sample Paper #1 before class (bring a copy, either electronically or by printing the handout).
- Bring to class whatever you need to work with the Greek New Testament.
