Week 3

Hour 1: Jesus & Israel's Hopes
This week, we will begin with your debate on the resolution, "Jesus was a disappointment to Israel's messianic hopes." Is that true of false? That is the question we'll take up in the first hour or so of class.

Hour 2: The Synoptic Problem and Biblical Interpretation Methods
From there, I have a lecture on the synoptic problem, and how it is that we have these three gospels that are so much alike, yet have different perspectives.

Hour 3: Paper #1 for Group Work
In the time that's left, we'll talk about sample Paper #1 (available as a Week 3 Handout in Resources) and the skills you'll need to produce one of those on your focal text.

Prepare for class like this:
  1. Be ready for the debate.
  2. Read Taylor reserve.
  3. Read Burridge, chapter 1.
  4. Read Carvalho, part 1.
  5. Take quiz before class.
  6. Read sample Paper #1 before class (bring a copy, either electronically or by printing the handout).
  7. Bring to class whatever you need to work with the Greek New Testament.

Week 2

This week, we look at the social and cultural background of the New Testament.
  1. Read the two chapters from the book by Wenham and Walton. These are in e-reserves.
  2. Take the quiz over this week's reading. You may use the readings to help you during the quiz.
  3. Since this is a quiet week, you might want to practice the Greek vocabulary test. You can find it in the exams-submissions area.

Week 1

There are no assignments to prepare for class on Feb. 9. All you will need is your Bible.
