Description

An investigation of the four Gospels’ depictions of Jesus’s betrayal, trial, and execution. The course explores historical, literary, and theological dimensions of the passion accounts, as well as how each one functions within its respective Gospel. Attention is given to the ways these texts have been interpreted in theological scholarship, in the visual and performing arts, and in Christian efforts to demean Jews. The course considers these narratives’ capacity to inform Christian ministry and preaching, both during Holy Week and throughout the year in bearing consistent, truthful, and creative witness to Christ crucified. Students can elect to have this course qualify as either a Bible elective or a preaching elective. There are no prerequisites for students seeking a Bible elective. For students seeking a preaching elective, the Foundations of Biblical Preaching course (PR 0150) is a prerequisite.
