Practice Identifying Verb Forms

I've produced a screen-shot video (.mp4) demonstrating how this site works. It is geared to a classical Greek text book, but is still helpful for you if you want to try to parse various verb forms and get feedback immediately. UPDATE since I made the video: I just figured out by pressing "Go to Drill by Form-Type," you can say you want only indicative verbs, or other limits. It's a typed instruction line in yellow at the bottom left of the tool.

Some of you have asked about the NET Bible that is required for the course. You need to have access to the Nestle-Aland, 27th edition or the United Bible Societies 4th edition. Here are some ways to get them. Throughout Week 6, I will add information here on other print and computer-based options.

NET-NA27 Diglot

Diglot means that two languages are put side by side in the book. This one has the Nestle-Aland, 27th ed. of the Greek New Testament, with all its notes, and the NET (New English Translation) Bible with all its notes, side by side. You can read the Greek on one side of the page, and read the NET on the other side of the page. The NET also offers lots of footnotes about how they got to the English they have for each verse. The book is listed as required on the syllabus. I suggest buying it from the NET people directly. It's $69.95 for a non-leather binding, and $99.95 for leather.

Accordance

This is a software program primarily for the Mac. There is a free trial that includes some morphologically tagged Greek and Hebrew texts for you to play around with.

The cheapest way to get into Accordance would be with the Starter Collection ($50.00) and then the Greek NT (NA27) with apparatus and tagging ($99.00). The bookstore used to be able to sell the Original Languages Collection at a substantial discount. The move to online textbook sales has (temporarily) put a crimp in that, but we hope by next semester to be able to sell the discounted BibleWorks and Accordance. I'm working on maybe getting this discount reinstated sooner.

Olive Tree Bible Reader

While Accordance, BibleWorks and Logos all have tablet access now, Olive Tree started on phones and so they know the handheld world very well. They now have desktop versions. All of their software is free; you pay for particular translations, notes, references and so on, but once you buy a text, you can read it on any device for which they have software (this is true of Accordance and Logos too, and maybe BibleWorks). You can feel nickel-and-dimed buying each text and translation separately, but they do have good sales if you get on their mailing list.

For any of these software programs, you want the Nestle-Aland, 27th ed., Greek text that is morphologically tagged (so you can search for all the inflected forms of a word, not just a single spelling of a word) and one that has the apparatus (which is the record of manuscript variations). The one I recommend is described here. It's $89.99.

These sites have older Greek texts and lexicons (a.k.a. dictionaries) available free of charge. They are not the only resources you should use or know about, but they are free and they can often be helpful.

Blue Letter Bible

This is a free site that allows you to do concordance searches on Greek words and look them up in the Thayer lexicon (c. 1889).

Great Treasures

You have to sign up for an account on this site, but after you do, you can see Greek and Greek/English parallel texts for the New Testament. Again, the resources are old and in the public domain. Recent manuscript research will not be available to you here, but it's a good site otherwise.

If you write out your own cards, you'll get practice writing, and you'll be recruiting more senses in the work of memorizing vocabulary. If you want ready-made cards, though, this box is all the vocabulary in your textbook, arranged in the order you'll encounter it.

Flashcard Exchange

This site has hundreds of flashcard sets made by students and teachers in various subjects. Key in "Mounce Greek" or other search terms like that to find flashcards you can study on a computer.

If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, I recommend the free app, Mental Case Classroom edition, or (the $4.00 version) Mental Case. You can make your own flashcards, or download sets from Flashcard Exchange to study on the phone.

Answer Key to the Mounce Workbook

This answer key was not written by Mounce, but by someone using his book. It represents one possible translation of the exercises, not the only correct one.

It is fine to use this to check your work. As you have questions about what you wrote vs. what is in the answer key, please ask one of the teaching team. We will be happy to go over questions with you in one-on-one sessions or (as time permits) in the conference call group.
