• Week 12

This is the handout that I walk through in this week's infinitives video.
    Required
    InfinitiveUses.pdf
Last week's quiz sentence #2 had a lot of people reeling. Here is a PowerPoint (without recorded audio) that walks you through that sentence. Your TA may use this in your first conference call. If not, you will benefit from clicking through it yourself. The last slide has four tips for translating complex sentences:
    1. Pay attention to cases. The only time accusative case can be the subject of a clause is when the clause’s verb is an infinitive.
    2. Split the sentence into sense units. Do not try to translate word-for-word, but unit by unit.
    3. Notice parallel structure, like the two future tense verbs in this sentence that require you to repeat the direct object á¼¡μάς in your translation.
    4. Know that the little words are the most versatile in any language. Don’t get too tied to your initial translation of them.

  • Final Project

Texts for the final project are:
    Jeff - Mark 2:1-12 - Jesus Heals a Paralytic.
Mary - John 10:7-18 - Jesus as Good Shepherd.
Keith - John 20:1-18 - The Empty Tomb & Mary Magdalene.
Beth - 1 Corinthians 1:26-2:5 - God Chose What Is Foolish.

As you see, each of the four teaching staff will be "point person" for one of these texts. That person's late-in-the-week conferences will focus on his/her final project text. You may work with any of these texts, regardless of who your TA has been during the semester.

For the second conference call of the week, you may do one of two things:
    • Attend a call that is related to the text you choose for your Final Project, or
    • Attend your usual call, even if it is not discussing your Final Project text.

    SampleFinal.pdf
This is a 6-page .pdf with notes on the manuscript tradition of each of your final project texts. You do not have to work with variant readings mentioned in these materials. If you do, however, you may use these pages as reference material. However, you offer your assessment of the evidence in your own words. If you quote from the Omanson volume, you MUST put the quote in quotation marks (this has been a problem in the past). Failure to do so will constitute plagiarism and result in a failed final project. If you have questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

One of the things that makes BDAG difficult to use is that almost everything in an entry is abbreviated! Here is a Word doc of all the abbreviations. I don't suggest printing it out (it's 103 pages!). Instead, I'm giving it to you so you can search for an abbreviation if you want to do so. You can use the shortcut key combination ctrl+F and find anything in a Word doc.
