Description
A survey of the history of the portrayal of biblical stories and characters across 2000 years of western art. The course attends to questions of choice of subject matter, the connection between significant events of church history and the way the Bible was being portrayed visually. The course engages such questions as: what would people have seen around them; what did such depictions tell them about God and God's people; what other elements of their cultures were strengthened or subverted by the Bible in the visual arts? (MA students concentrating in either Old or New Testament can take this course for credit in their respective fields.)
